Here is a pencil version of a drawing that will be apearing in a glamour girls book I am working on. I'll keep you posted on the completion of the book and some of the art to be featured in. Not all of them, as you understand I want YOU to buy this book, when it's out. ;)

It has a few nods to many of my favorite things. First of all, my very best friend is the model for this one. My all time inspiration when it comes to good girl art. She and I have hauled a long way, working together on many images thru out my professional carrier. I will never pay hommage enough to how inspirational she has been and hopefully will keep on being, during all those years.
Then my inconditional love for Frenchbulldogs! Hell, my website says it all, right?
The title for the issue is a nod to one of my favorite movies from Bollywood. K3G, for those who are in the know, Kabhi Kushi Kabbie Gham for the rest of you. I found the name, which translate to something like moonlight square market sounded like that of a distant other world, so I just decided to use it. Can't get more exotic than this.
Finally, my passion for everything from the 40's/50's era, when it comes to science fiction and adventure!

A perfect blend, I 'd say! I hope it shows...

Okay, so you undersgtand by now how I work, right? A quick prelim, scanned and fancyfully colored on Pshop, to sell the concept...

Donc, bon, maintenant, vous avez compris comment je procède, n'est-ce pas? Je vous rabaisse, je me calme et je reviens a mon sujet... Non, je déconne, je veux dire, au noveau de ma démarche artistique. Je tape un truc rapide au crayon, que je scanne et que je mets vite fait en couleur sur Pshop.

Then, knowing what I need as reference, I call my freinds and models that would fit the bill. This time, I had help from Emmanuelle, since she has a figure close to the main character to appear on the cover this time. Hey, it's NOT always going to be funny pics, okay? Doodling and drawing sexy girls IS serious business.

Ensuite, si j'ai besoin d'une reference, je fais appel à mes amis et modèles, en fonctions des besoins. Cette fois-çi, j'ai travaillé avec Emmanuelle, qui a la silhouette du personnage que je devais representer sur cette couverture. Eh oui, je ne poste pas toujours que des images débiles ou drôles, okay? Dessiner des mickeys, c'est un vrai metier.

Then I get started on pencils. For this assignment I decided to go full pencils and colors with Photoshop. I've grown really comfortable with the tonal paper from Strathmore, " Artagain " 12X18 60Ib. Several different colors you can pick from, usually for me, depending on the mood I want to set. First cover was a sunset so I went for yellowish tone. This one is going to be set in the blue, nightlike, type of mood.

Après cela, je m'attaque aux crayonné définitifs. Comme pour la precédente couv' ( merci, y'en a deux qui suivent... ) ( ah oui, mais en fait, y'en a que deux qui lisent, c'est pour ça..! ) je change de style graphique et me la donne à donf sur le crayonné, la couleur étant totalement appliquée sur Photoshop. L'avantage de travailler le prélim du début sur le même logiciel, permet de repiquer les couleurs que l'editeur a vu et validé, et de garder les effets appliqués a l'image, entre autre. Gain de temps et gain de temps, or, donc.

La teinte du papier varie selon l'humeur ou l'ambiance que je veux donner à l'ensemble, au final. Ici, une baston nocturne, seulement eclairée par la lune et les tirs de blasters deviés par le sabre laser. Toujours le même papier, Strathmore " Artagain " 30,5X45,7, mais au lieu du jaune de la première couverture, j'ai opté pour un bleu/gris plus à propos.

I'll just show the final cover when the publisher has posted it on its website... in the meantime, that is the best I can provide...

Je vous montrerai bien le rendu final, mais la couverture definitive n'est pas encore postée sur le site de l'éditeur, alors en attendant, il faudra vous contenter de ça...

Ways of the Force...

Hi Guys,

Since the cover is out now, I thought I'd show here part of the process I go through for such assignment. I get a few lines from my editor and start sketching a few lay-outs. Very loose.

At this stage, to me, it's more about the idea. To hint people with where the characters will stand and what they'll be doing. No intention of light, or mood/colors. Sometimes, if I feel someone might find it too loose to anticipate what it could look like, in the end - Not everyone has the ability to project himself in what the image will look like - I quickly put colors with photoshop on the lay-out. It usually sells the idea better.
I also need sometimes to refine the lay-out, so I get to solve a few inconsistencies or tricky questions that might arise later, at pencil stage, and that I'd hate to be stuck with: tangents, between characters and background elements, or between characters themselves. From there, I know I'll still make last minute changes, slight ones, that no one will notice but will help the image be better. Says the less objective party in this.

At any stage, what really matters is that whoever commissions and/or validates should know I only try to improve on the image.

Then comes a decisive part of the process. At least for me, always aiming for more realistic rendering with a blend of graphic licence, still.

Anyway, it is always more fun when you have someone to assist you. A pain to deal with on your own: photo reference. Costume, obviously, never fits with someone my size. Not to mention the model looks ridiculous, too. heh. But it serves its purpose.
That stage is actually helpful to gather data on how folds run on fabric, given the position of the arms, the way light hits that awesome six-pack... So on and so forth... Not to mention it's a tremendous help to "break" the habits of, let's say, drawing cloth and folds the same repetitive way. The process of relying on skills that have proven their efficiency pages after pages - and which sometimes helps define a style can also become a drawback - no pun intended - and I tend to assimilate it to artistic sclerosis. indulging in the same gimmickes slowly kills creativity, in my opinion.
It has been one of my main struggles over the years, when it comes to my art: always try, as much as possible, to switch from one style to the other, and try in instill, inject a little bit of whatever I could understand from the previous. It helps break any of the bad habits that could lead an artist to choose the same angle to draw a fist, or a clutching hand, the same foreshortening view or the same expression. Any artist knows what I am talking about as well as how hard it is to go against his own natural inclinations...

But enough considerations on what makes your habits-in-rendering become a style.
All I know is observation is the key to rendering with variety.

I usually add a few filters on Photoshop to help me get in the color mood for the image, too. Praise Photoshop.

I decided to go for tonal paper on that series of covers. It helps on many levels: Setting the mood faster, because the shadows and hilites pop out immediately, making the color of the paper a third tone that adds volume to the designs. At this stage, I also use reference to capture the likeness of the actor, because it is requested. The tricky part was to make him look younger, especially given the size ( on the final piece he is only 6 inches tall ). Pressure? Naaaaah...

And then there was the chick. Scarce information on her is an understatement. Thank God Mahmud had a design he made of her. I hope my pencils do it justice.

For the rest of the piece, I drew the ship on a separate sheet. Then imported it on the final file. before putting the colors. I made the front look like the actual front view of the T shaped cooning towers for Star Destroyers. That's how much of a geek I can be, just in case the picture with the cheap suit didn't give it away already.

The 25 is because the cover was made as a celebration piece for Dark Horse 25th anniversary.

So, it begins...

Ca y est, c'est parti...

This is an alternate cover for Scott Allie and Mahmud A. Asrar's " Star Wars: Jedi The Dark Side # 1( of 5 ).
I am trying to build a progression in colors and composition with the next covers: One major color tone for each upcoming cover, and drawing - no pun intended - closer to the main character - and moving backwards again, after issue # 3. As if, within the body of work of all 5 covers, you'd progress closer to the character on the cover... like a zoom in. And after issue # 3, That would be a zoom out. I am also aiming for iconic poses. Mahmud is doing such a great job on action covers, in general and specifically on the title. Go check his blog.

Voici la couverture alternative au comic-book Star Wars écrit par Scott Allie et dessiné par Mahmud A. Asrar intitulé Star Wars: Jedi-The Dark Side #1 ( sur 5 ).
J'essaie de constituer une progression par la couleurs et la composition, au travers des prochaines couvertures: une tonalité principale par couv', et une progression " physique " vers le personnage representé ( different sur chaque couverture ). Puis une régression, après la numéro 3, un peu comme un zoom avant, progressif de la couv' 1 a la 3, puis un zoom arrière, a partir de là, pour revenir a une taille de representation des personnages dans l'image, similaire a la première couverture...
Ca sera plus clair en voyant toutes les images, à la fin. là, désolé, je ne suis pas abilité a tout balancé. Patience, jeunes Padawans...

J'ai opté pour des poses de "poseurs", plus iconiques - en tous cas, j'ai essayé - proposant autre chose que ce que Mahmud fait déjà, sur les couvertures officielles, avec tellement de talent. allez voir son blog.

So I focus on the more paused characters. It also helps me get familiar with the SWU if you can believe that. Ich bin ein UBER Star Wars fan since year one - yeah, I am THAT old, but so young at heart, with the Force. Heh - so I didn't want to screw up things on my first Dark Horse assignment.

J'avais besoin de me familiariser avec l'univers Star Wars. Ca va faire marrer ceux qui savent que je suis un Ouf de SW, mais professionellement, c'est une autre paire de manches! On a pas envie de se rater...

I'll post some related funny stuff - Do I look ridiculous in a cheap jedi halloween costume or what? - Which were really helpfull though, to achieve realistic rendering and pose. No, really.

Je posterai bientot un " work in progress " un peu amusant, puisque j'ai eu recours au plus mauvais modèle pour la séance photo me permettant d'affiner ma technique de rendu réaliste. En l'occurence, ce modèle, eh ben... c'est moi.

A year ago, I met two young fans at my friends Terri and Peter's home, in Glen Rock.

Well, to be honest I must admit only one out of two of the wonder twins was a huge Spider-man fan. I sat at the table - we were having dinner - and a little before the end of the meal, I saw two lovely blonde girls entering the room.

Not even impressed by the French ( Can you believe it? my charisma has a limit and it's cool that way. ) I was told it was Sylvie ( football Tee shirt ) who was a Spider-man fan. So I started to work my magic.

Hah! She didn't seem impressed at all! Ooooh, the irony...

Nevertheless, I know from experience how decisive a moment like this can be, when a grown up comes to you and says : " I remember when I was ten and you did that drawing in front of me..."

So I made sure I wouldn't crawl under a stone, should that piece show up in a few years on the internet. That's when little Michelle ( pink stripes ) granted me with a " Yeah, he's not too bad! "

Hahah! A good lesson in humility.

It's been a year almost day to day now, and I promised those little Angels I'd post the picture. I am so proud and happy to have you as fans, girls!

Oh yeah, here I thought I had made such a poor impression on the girls and I just learned that they met with Terri this week end... asking what had become of the comic book artist.

Autumn commission/ La grosse commission de l'automne...

Hi guys,

Here is a work in progress of a commission long awaited. I wanted to wait for the last week before delivery to show it here. Ze tease in me, again...
It's always very tricky for me to get back to traditionnal painting, because I am not very patient when it comes to see what the piece is going to look like.
I guess I got used to the quick result a blend of fancy computer FX and textures can do on a scanned line art, as opposed to a piece like this one, which takes time if you want it to reflect your level of skills as well as the different moods you were in throughout the whole process.
My only hope is that it doesn't show too much of the struggle I went through with the likeness, the lighting, the textures, etc...

Make no mistake, I'm struggling on a piece like this!
Not because of the foliage - so many tiny leaves to avoid when painting the different layers that help define the volumes and shape of the body - but more because of my impatience.
As it happens, way too often, I didn't do any prelim.
It is my curse, that impatience.
I feel I would get over so many obstacles - anticipated or not - if I DID what I keep suggesting any aspiring artist to do. Spending time on prelims, to solve possible composition struggles, to anticipate the possible wrong message this color conveys, associated with this other.
When it comes to being alone at my drawing table, with anyone else but me to work with, I just don't feel like going through the whole game of prelims. As much as I like it when I work with a team - let's say, in the animation industry, for example, where it is more of a team effort - I have no problem exchanging views, drawings, ideas, concepts, before getting to the final work. Well, the final work doesn't reflect your personal touch too often, either, in animation, but that is another story...
So anyway, what happens is I'm usually too aware of everything that is already brewing in my brain, ready to spill on the piece i'm doinf alone, in my studio. Alone. with no one to talk to me and say: " Look what I sketched. You might want to go and start again from what I did, since you seem stuck!". Stuck. Alone. But I can't help it, when I work ( alone ) it feels like: giving it away beforehand, on a prelim, would be lost.

At the same time, it'a a subtle and complex process, because I don't HAVE the image clearly there, in my head, before I even start drawing it. Of course I get a sharper view of what it's going to look like, as I get more shapes, and then details, layed out along the way, but I also try stay opened to what my mood will throw in - at the last minute - to keep the whole object very " alive ", almost on an organic level...
As the piece is going through its very unique full growth, the expansion of it is as much the result of a thought-out subject, as it is of a " go with the flow " philosophy.
Again, it's something I try to keep in balance through the whole building process. But it takes a lot of energy I KNOW I should put somewhere else, sooner, in the whole creative strategy, to achieve a greater piece.

I am just afraid I might get bored putting the finishes on something that misses the raw energy I put on the prelim, or the attempt to render this part of a piece with subtlety or shyness - a quick color wash and voila! - that I might achieve on the color study... I feel like I won't be able to reproduce it or make it as great!
Let's face it, I am a coward. And I'm lazy. I know people wouldn't say or think that of me ( What? Come oooon, Guys! )... But it's there. Just on a deeper, more concealed level.

I rely too much on my memory, and my growing experience, but I can tell it's taking so much of the focus I could use to achieve greater images. Lazy coward.

I am not saying at all I don't like a piece like this! It has a special meaning for the person who commissioned it and I try to make it a personal thing too, everytime. Don't get me wrong! This one is no exception. I just wish I could fight more efficiently that old bad habit o' mine ( Lazy cowaaaaaaaard! ) and deliver a greater piece.

Hopefully, this piece not being finished yet will allow me to change that.

Sometimes, laying it all down, putting words on it, makes it all a bit easier.

So yeah, this blog is my therapy ... So what?

This here work in progress of a commission is from a character I am asked to draw more and more these days - Dejah Thoris, a princesse of Mars, love interest of John Carter, a confederate captain that is magically transported to Mars...

Dude, I dunno what this Edgar Rice Burroughs was smoking back in 1912, but it was the real deal!

Okay, let's cup ... errrr... Cut! Cut! CUT to the chase, and remind the visitor that a Dejah Thori s piece was already posted some time ago, on this very blog! Aaaaah technology, my friend...

So I like to tease! So what? This Dejah Thoris piece, once completed, will be available at NYCC in a week. along with a few other stuff, such as a Red Sonja or a Vampirella, as well as a Magdalena.

Mais enfin, je ne cherche pas a me faire plaindre, j'espere juste que le biscuit que j'apporte calmera la faim de tous ceux - et ils sont nombreux, je le sais! - qui guettent avec une assiduite qui force le respect, la mise a jour de ce blog, que les americains nous envie ( en fait, ils s'en foutent! )

Anyways, comme on dit dans la langue de Cervantes, voici un petit " en cours de fabrication " qui ravira les plus obsedes d'entre vous et fera pousser des cris d'orfraie aux plus pudibonds ( Ah bon, y'en a ici? Dommage... )

Ce dessin represente un personnage qu'on me demande de plus en plus souvent - et quand on ne me le demande pas, je le dessine aussi, la preuve! - Dejah Thoris, une princesse de Mars, interet amoureux du heros des aventures martiennes de John Carter, capitaine de l'armee confederee americaine assez bizarrement transporte la bas...donc.

Je sais pas ce qu'il fumait, Edgar Rice Burroughs, en 1912, mais apparement c'etait de la bonne came!

Bon, pour revenir a nos mel... moutons, precisons juste qu'il y a sur ce blog un post plus ancien relatif a une edition personelle de ce meme ouvrage ou apparait Dejah Thori s pour la premiere fois.

Ceci est un avant-gout des commissions que je compte proposer a la convention de New York, dans une semaine.

En attendant, " Enjoie! " comme on dit encore en castillan!

THIS f.....g made my day! Will Allred, a collector of ( character ) Deja Thoris art and his lovely wife Stacey, made me a very special gift: a hardcover limited edition of ( only 6 of them Earth and Barsoom included! ) Edgar Rice Burroughs' "A Princess of Mars " with a sketch he got from me! Of course, Expert in Martian Arts Adam Hughes' in it too, How could it be otherwise? The bottom line is, we delivered art to someone who's so appreciative of the talents he wanted to thank us for the good work... Well, That's a helluva great gift you did to us, Will! Thank you so much for coming up with this great idea and granting me with such an honor!

Alors celle-là... Si c'est pas la classe! Un collectioneur de dessins basés sur l'univers créé par Edgar Rice Burroughs - le Papa de Tarzan- est venu me voir à ma table pour m'offrir une édition limitée du roman " Une Princesse de Mars ", mais contenant les sketches que certains artistes ont fait pour lui. Et j'en fait partie! Déja Thoris est un de mes personnages favoris depuis que je l'ai decouverte ( et plus d'une fois, devrais ajouter - ma modestie dusse-t-elle en souffrir... ;) au debut des anées 90. J'ai toujours eu deux énormes raisons de la dessiner avec plaisir. Enfin voilà, quoi... tout ça pour dire que ma representation d'une de leur plus sublime ambassadrice figure a présent dans les chroniques Martiennes...

Pencils for an Origin page of a Marvel character. Fun to work on. Especially the Skrulls. I like it when I get to reshoot a scene that readers light have seen in the actual story with the characters. As on panel 4. This was made after Leinil Yu's secret invasion version. Trying to stay true to the original art and bring my own stuff in it. Hope I succeeded. I got Julien Hugonnard-Bert to ink this for Marvel. Not a new-comer but that is his first assignment for the House of Ideas. Watch it, True Believers, this guy might as well become the next great inker for the upcoming decade!

Had this one in my mind for a long time. Jason's idea to display a fake menu for the rates was great but I wanted to push the design a little bit further. I'm glad this is ready right before flying to Kansas City. A good way to test it...

Ca faisait un bout de temps que je voulais modifier un peu la bonne idée que Jason avait eu de faire un menu pour les prix des sketchs en convention... Mais on avait fait ça à la va vite. Je pousse l'idée un peu plus loin, en espérant que ça ne sente pas le réchauffé...

Didn't have time to finish those sketches in Orlando... I don't do that too often, but I had this image in my mind I didn't want to let go. So I fixed it on paper.

Je ne fais pas ça souvent, mais quand j'ai sur les bras des sketchs que je n'ai pas pu faire sur le lieu de convention, je les fais à la maison... tranquille. Celui là, j'avais l'image tellement inscrite dans mon esprit que je ne voulais pas attendre trop, de peur de la perdre. Alors je l'ai fixé sur papier.

This Darth Talon is one of the first con sketches I did at Megacon, Orlando, just today. Didn't get to do many, but I had a great time on the piece. As always when Gary comes to me with those Star Wars characters to draw, it's something I know I'll really enjoy drawing.

That Batwoman for Darby is not too shabby either... Can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store for me!

On se rapproche de la version finale du costume de Zatanna, le personnage que je dessine depuis quelques mois maintenant pour DC comics. Avec un modèle comme Sandra C, la moitié du travail est déja fait, vous ne trouvez pas? Le chapeau de la Reine de la Magie lui va comme un gant - Si tant est que cela veuille dire quelque chose...

Getting closer to completing a comicbook-accurate version of Zatanna's costume for the next millenia! Once you've found the right model for it, I'd say half the job is done! Sandra C. is a professional model, singer, perfomer that instantly fitted in the hat of the Mistress of Magic. Working with her is a delight. De retour sur mon terrain de prédilection... Le dessin au crayon! Vous pensiez quoi? Bande de perverts?
Plus sérieusement, une des premières pierre a l'édifice de l'année pour moi: un projet de bouquin d'illustration de pin ups. Je retarde la mise en place de ce projet depuis des décennies! Sisi, je vous assure... Ceux qui me connaissent bien sauront de quoi je parle. Un peu de manque de confiance en soi, deux ou trois grammes de travaux alimentaires, un gros quintal de flemme... Mais la conscience du temps qui passe trop vite, les opportunités de mener à bien ce projet, les rencontres précieuses, la fierté qui en prend un coup, quand je vois les potes y arriver - simplement parce qu'ils s'y mettent! - me portent definitivement vers ce but, et avec de l'appétit, encore. Et vous, vous la sentez la faim de loup de Tex avery?

Back to basics, folks! I meant pencil drawing! What didja expect, ya pervs! Seriously, the mojo's back and this image can be seen as a stepping stone to this years' personal project: a Good Girl Art book. A project of decades in the making, no BS... My fellow french buddies who've known me for quite some time now, could concur on the following. Missing self-confidence at times, distracted by an interest for animation and its assignments that paid the bills, A fair amount of laziness...
And then you get mixed notions of time; the one that flies by, the one that bring great opportunites to actually do the stuff. Decisive encounters, too. Not to mention hurt pride, when you see your buddies who are already there - why not me? -, everything drives me to that project. And with Tex Avery's wolf's appetite! Can you feel it too?

Zatanna comes to life. Part 1

Hey fellas, long time no see, or read or whatever! Missed quite a few occasions to tell you more about li'l ole me, but, as always, I'll catch up sometime. Anyhoo, here is my latest field of interest: creating, on my spare time, an outfit based after the design of the character I'm drawing these days. The name's [Zatanna] and she's a super hero/magician in the DC Universe. I thought it would be cool to have a model don the costume and stand around at our booth during conventions, to promote my work on the title.
So let me show you the work in progress that will eventually lead us to a sexy girl in a costume that includes fishnets! ' nuff said!

First, of course, everything begins with a sketch, so that I can explain what I have in mind to my friend Marylise. She accepted to help me on this project by sewing the whole thing together. And man, thanks to her skills, this costume is going to be simply awesome!

A week or so before, we went to the fabric district in Paris, to get the right stuff for Zatanna. She deserves the best. Geez, those chicks don't come in cheap, ya know? Anyway... We had the silky black fabric for the outside and a red satin for the inside. You know when you've found excatly what you had come for. This was no exception for Maylise and I agreed on the rolls of fabric instantly!

So i drew quickly and handed the doodles to her, she made a few changes and suggestions to make the cutting easier, the folds more ample... That was my main concern: I wanted heavy folds on the cape so that it'd convey a sense of wider stature to the character.
Once we agreed on how long every part should be, we started measuring on the paper that would serve as a guide for the cutting. and drew a pattern.
As you will see later, the cape consists un two longer pieces in the front -so that idealy, the cape, when spreading over the shoulders, would be in the shape of a butterfly ( that's me tapping into my feminine side, now let's move on... ) - with a tail as in a tux, that would accentuate the butterfly feel... Here we indicate with different colors, what would be the extra fabric we need for the hem ( black ). The brim of the cape being indicate in red.

Marylise started to cut ( while I was still cutting... She's faster, no hesitation, no flaw of the hand... when I was shaking, afraid to ruin the pattern or later, the fabric! )

It's a task of patience... pinning the pattern to the fabric, in order to cut the exact shape you've just designed ( make that thirty minutes ago... I said I was slow, and afraid to miss! )

So I'm a joker, so what? Meet Zatanno, mortals... And cower!

We were so busy cutting the fabric that none of us thought of taking picture of that moment... sorry guys.

Just know that it went well... And that Marylise started to pin the four pieces of the back together ( two black pieces to red for the inside, shall I remind you... ) to get a glimpse at what it should look like, in the end... after all, we are only half-way done: there's still the whole sewing process! " It's the easiest part. " she says...

So here's what it looks like so far. Not bad... I can see we are on the right tracks. Note: the fabric is not as shiny as one would expect. Of course, fellas and fellettes! We work inside out, to keep the good side of the cloth protected!

After a fex hours in the afternoon, I had to run out and thought Marylise would wait for another session together to finish the cape... But she was so excited in working on sucha unique piece, that she went on with it! she kept sending me text messages on how much she enjoyed helping me with this! She sent me pictures in the evening, to show how it looked once completed.

On the back view below, you'll notice the tux tail.

We're gettign closer and closer to a pretty nifty Zatanna costume, wouldn't you say?
I told her to take a few pictures on the next day, with a top hat that I knew her boyfriend had. She also had a bow tie that fitted to a T!

Voilà, Ladies and Gents! More pics to come soon, for we are trying to have this costume ready for the french con in February! Not to mention these will hopefully be with the model who's actually going to wear it there... heheh. Behave, boys!

Con Tour, Part I - Tour de Cons. 1ere partie.

Posting again, after a long while. I'll just mention that over the past two months, one was well occupied by roaming around the US to attend conventions. Let's start with Long Beach, which took place beginning of October. We had a lot of space, two tables for Eric Canete and me, which Jason takes care of. Displaying the sketchbooks, prints, and original art for fans to purchase.

I love attending to cons, because it's a good occasion to meet fans, of course, but also, gather with friends I've made over the years, in the U.S. Drawing sketches is almost always fun, and easy but knowing I'll hang out with buddies, artists or collectors alike, that's great! Never anticipated that would be the highlight of my trips, back in the days when I was struggling so hard in being a nobody in dat wonderful world of french animation! Hahaha!

Okay, so we're all set, and look who's working now? Eric and Jay. I'm judt playiong with the camera, right? That one was taken at the very beginning of the day, so it was starting slow... But usually, things get wild pretty fast for Eric and I. Lots of people on the sketch lists. So keep in mind to show up early if you want a piece from us...

Always the joker, Eric hides behind his art. Then again, don't we all?

A quick headsketch. with that new brush I bought shortly before arriving. It is so easy to use, the fluidity of lines, the quick textures I come up with makes this tool one of my favorite in a long time! I actually endend up drawing a lot of sketches thru out the cons, with this new tool - and therefore, a new style - but I was concerned the fans might be disturbed or upset by this change in my work. Fortunately, I have great fans.

Here is another example of what that pentel brush can do. It's been on the market for quite some time now, I had almost forgotten about such a wonderful tool. But getting back to live sketch, in the bus, bars , streets and such, I had to look for the perfect practical tool to express myself in a different way from a regular comic book page ( see the www.frenchbulldogstudio.com for that or my CAF page: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=9211 ). cartridges when refill is needed. and Voilà!

I like this one vedy vedy much... Strong type, yet feminine. not the exactly the brainless bimbo...

The dream team! who could imagine behind those two actually hide Shaggy and Scooby? I'll explain later...

I can't explain too much here, just keep in mind Eric seems to like disguising himself into Iconic characters of Pop Culture. Just remember I mentioned Shaggy and Scooby above. Pop culture because I've never seen him in the guise of Plato, or Rameses, or Sigmung Freud, but hey, the guy's full of surprise. Who knows? Anyway, with his white hooded sweater he cracked us up by making an impression of Princess Leïa sending coordinates to the Rebel alliance. Where does he get those zanny ideas? That matches the point of Eric's blog current banner: His brain's always in motion...

Invité par Franck, un pote inscrit sur Facebook, a une soirée d " 'amis virtuels " qui avaient décidé de se rencontrer dans le monde réel. Là, un petit bout de fille plein de peps et d'originalité, parmi d'autres artistes, a interprété ses compositions au violoncelle et chant. elle commence par des boucles vocales et à l'instrument, puis chante la mélodie par dessus.

I was approached, thru a common friend, by two comedians, to work on their promotional poster for a famous french summer festival. After a few drinks in a café, with the two crazy and insanely funny guys, I started to throw a few ideas on paper. The pencils you see above where done in a café, waiting for them on a second meeting.
This served as a test, since they had so many great ideas. I would push this one a little further and see if it worked.
Their sense of humour is mostly based on non-sense. The caption under the "Loïc and Seb save Willy" goes " Come on, l'il Squirrel... Fly!" They liked the rendition of their concept, but to be honest, we agreed it looked too much like a comic book cover. That could misguide the audience. Plus they came back with a bunch of new ideas, as fun as this one. I had worked on concepts too, and proposed this art below. They liked it, but not as much...

... As this one - which was their idea - which happened to be also my favorite.
They decided later to change the color chart to red instead of blue, for the type, but I think this one works better.

St-Malo is really a great source of inspiration for sketching. The region has a strong history that spans over hundreds of years, mostly about corsairs, pirates and promises of adventures, dramas, all related to the sea. As some of you may know, the Old Towne was built as a fortress, to prevent possible invasion from our oh-so beloved brit neighbours. And guess what? They won, eventually. Last we heard of, they were settling in Dordogne, way down South-West.

My best buddy asked me if I could draw her a Baby Yoda. I told her he already had a baby face. Then, on the way back home, I started to sketch, in the subway. The first versions were not at all convincing. After a good night sleep, I decide to give it a try and here it is. Hope she likes it.

Ma super copine m'a rappelé que je lui avait promis de lui dessiner un Yoda bébé... Je me souviens lui avoir dit que Yoda avait déjà une bouille de nourrisson. Hier, en rentrant chez moi, dans le métro, j'ai commencé a gribouiller, mais rien de bien concluant... Après une bonne nuit de sommeil, je me suis mis à ma table à dessin et en quelques minutes, je suis arrivé à ça. J'espère que ça lui plaira...

Il y a longtemps que je n'avais pas ouvert la bouche pour exprimer cette frustration sourde qui revient a ebullition chaque fois que je me retrouve piégé dans une voiture dont la radio est verrouillée sur RFM ou autre Chérie FM. Les bluettes faussement empruntées, qui ne sont que des poncifs redondants sur l'amour, les femmes, Paris, la crise du trentennaire qui courent après ces années d'ado, de drague, d'éxcès, de performances futiles. Qui court après sa propre infantilisation, en fait. Alors tout cela, sans oublier la rupture, la seduction, c'est ce que les français savent écrire le mieux. Mouais. A voir. Le pire, c'est qu'en 30 ans, on a réussi a faire , en gros, ce que les ricains faisaient déjà: du " I love you, baby " mais a notre sauce! Enrobé et enrubanné dans les reliefs d'une exception culturelle FrAonçAhaise, Mossieu!

Tout a commencé avec une discussion sur Marc Lavoine sur un blog ami... Le mec, quand il parle d'autre chose que de sa musique, a le merite d'être plus interessant et profond que ses congénères. Je suis prêt a le reconnaitre. Sérieux... Le peu que je connaisse du bonhomme me plait. Il a un petit côté Ventura. L'homme, pas le perso de ciné, hein? ( Et pas le chef d'orchestre non plus, bande d'incultes! Pour les plus jeunes cherchez à Ray Ventura ). Mais bon, revenons a l'objet de mon ressentiment.
Si vous vous arrêtez cinq minutes pour observer... la chanson française actuelle, et ben... C'est d'un chiant! Alors on va commencer à aligner les cadors, ok?
Bénabar. le faux cool/décontract', gendre idéal, mais un peu glandeur. Qui crèèèèèvèe de devenir incontournable dans le show Baise. Ca commence a se voir. Vincent Delerm, qui, tout comme Béna, fait son gras en nous racontant ce qu'on connait déjà de nos vies, dans ce qu'elles ont de plus etriquées, foireuses, peu reluisantes. La facilité n'a jamais été un talent. Bandes de branleurs. Calogero le gagnant au repêchage... Jean-Louis ou-est-ton-esprit-rebelle Aubert. Olivia Ruiz ( prière d'ajouter a chaque fois " Nous-pète-les-couilles-avec-sa-fausse-voix-de-gamine " ) Raphaël, Renan Luce, Florent (His)pagny ( que n'a t-il déjà chanté? A mon avis, il veut entrer dans le livre des records, à la rubrique "Aimez-moi, j'ai tout fait! " ), Miossec, Dominique A, les Laurel et Hardy de la déprime. N'oublions pas nos vieux, qui n'ont plus rien de créatif a dire... Souchon et Voulzy ( les Roux et Combaluzier de la musique d'ascenceur à la française...) Julien Clerc, le chanteur pour femmes avec un Q.I de cycliste. A chaque fois qu'il est invité sur les plateau télé, genre la grosse emission ( inutile ) , il donne l'impression de ne pas comprendre 1° ce qu'il fait là. 2° les questions. 3° qui il est.

Vous savez quoi? Franck Michaël, ou Fredéric François dont on se moque quand on a fini de les oublier, sont presque plus authentiques et sincères que ces bouffons qui nous endorment en occupant le terrain, squattant les ondes ( RFM, c'est radio Balavoine-Berger-Goldman J'y reviendrai... ) les emissions radios et télé les invitent immanquablement alors que ces gars n'ont rien a dire!
Au risque de passer pour un vieux con, je n'ai pas honte de dire que j'ai connu RFM - que je n'ecoute plus depuis, et ben... une vingtaine, hein? Sauf quand je dois faire Paris-Quimper en bagnole - à l'époque ou De Caunes, Zéro et Algoud, y faisaient les pitres incontrolés, et bon sang, que c'était sain! et Bon. et inventif. et respectueux. Des ainés ( Pierre Dac... ) et des auditeurs.
Aujourdh'ui, RTL2, RFM, et consorts, c'est: en engliche, Radio Phil Collins, Radio Billy Paul, Radio Sade. Radio Cock Robin... De temps en temps, il essaient de rattraper le retard ( ou les auditeurs un poil plus jeunes... ) Radio Oasis, ou Blur, Tokio hotel, c'est selon... Mais vous voyez ce que je veux dire. Remplacez les mentions citées par ceux que vous auriez repéré et que j'aurais oublié - ou pas eu envie - de citer. En français: Radio Berger, Radio Balavoine ( Ah ça, on rend hommage a nos morts, c'est sûr... Ils s'en foutent, de là ou ils sont, c'est couvert par le choeur des Anges... ) Radio Sanson, Radio Clerc, Radio Souchon... Mais je m'arrête, ca devient redondant. Vous avez pigé de toute façon... Hors ces piliers indéboulonnables, point de Salut. Aussi nocif que la misère sexuelle, la misère intellectuelle.

Réécoutez "l'Affiche Rouge", de Ferré, ou "I can write left handed", de Bill Withers, ou "Mr President" de Pink...Ou tout Gainsbourg ( qui pourtant méprisait son art... mais il n'etait pas dupe, lui. ) ou tout Brel, ou Brassens. Ou Franck Michaël. Ce serait presque ce qu'il y a de plus rebelle, finalement, par les temps qui courent.

Kind of a hommage to a buddy o' mine, Eric Canete, who's finally visiting us in Paris. He'll be here for a few days. His style is simply awesome!!! It's a wonder why no french editor has put the hook on him before he gets too busy working on monthly comics. Or get back to animation. He would be so impressive on a graphic-novel format - the kind french industry makes it: we call this an "album" - and could show to more people the full measure of his talent.

People get more and more aware of the artistic potential hidden within every animation teams. DVD bonuses, video games, magazines and the internet has allowed artist to display their personal art or their input in whichever big or small production work-in-progress they've been part of. Eric's no exception, I'm always amazed at the powerful energy that instantly catches a reader who would have a peek to his work for the first time. Heck, it still works on second view, and third, and...

So before he gets there, and because we both might work on some cool SW related stuff at some point soon, I decided to indulge into a little illustration of the few characters I can bare from the Extended Universe, or New Trilogy. Can't say I love it all - I'll always be a fan of the original universe, for nostalgic reasons, I guess, but also for undescribable character depiction you can't just find in the rest of the Star Wars franchise - but I can't say I hate it all either. There are some good things in what SW has become, especially in the clone wars animated stuff. Both traditional and CG.
Anyway, I just wanted to play a little bit with a different style - I sometimes draw like this when I want to relax from my published comic-book style. It's fast, it fun, it's dynamic. Maybe I should do more of these... Check this blog. Quien sabe?

j'ai fait ça aujourdh'ui, histoire de marquer le coup. Ca fait 32 ans qu'il est parti chanter avec les anges, le Roi du Rock. Une amie me disait aujourdh'ui qu'entre lui, Jackson, Pavaroti, Ray Charles, Jimmy Hendrix, Jim Mo, Janis, John Lennon, Farinelli, Caruso, la Callas et C. Jérôme, ça devait etre le concert permanent, là-haut... Moi je crois surtout que ca doit être un Sacré bordel! Sans parler de C, qu'est pas dans le rythme...

Je sais pas pourquoi j'ai choisi cette tof, la super coupe, sans doute... Ah bah on peut pas etre le Roi de tout, non plus! 'Z'êtes marrant, vous...

De retour en France, j'ai mis un peu d'ordre dans mes dossiers de dessins, et je suis retombé sur ces croquis - que je comptais poster bientôt de toute façon. Mon voyage sur l'Ile de Pâques a laisser un souvenir indélébile. Alors que je m'attendais à m'ennuyer un peu ( des caillous, okay, et puis quoi? ), j'ai été litteralement captivé par le mystère inéxpliqué de cette île unique au monde.

La rencontre des gens vivant là-bas. Il semble que vivre en être humain prenne tout son sens, dans des lieux isolés comme celui-çi. J'ai connu pourtant la proverbiale gentillesse des polynésiens, mais on est là un cran encore au dessus. A Tahiti, de nos jours, de toute façon, il est plus rare de faire decrocher un sourire a quiconque dans la rue. Quand j'y suis arrivé, en 79, c'etait encore monnaie courante.

A Rapa nui, c'est encore de l'ordre du naturel, de l'instinctif. Attention, hein? Je suis pas rousseausiste pour deux ronds! Mais il est vrai que l'inconnu qui chevauche, dont on entend le galop du cheval lancé sur la route ( goudronnée, ben ouais, la merde atteind la totalité du monde... ) et qui, arrivant a ton niveau, te souris et te dis bonjour, et ben c'est con de s'en emerveiller, mais ca fait du bien... Essaie de faire ça a Paris, tiens, pour voir!

Bon, je passe sur les conjectures magiques des pseudos experts auto-proclamés, à propos des statues, tout ça... Ca m'interesse de savoir comment ils ont fait, c'est sûr... mais l' hypothèse capilo-tractée d'aliens géants qui seraient venus dans ce coin perdu du pacifique... Ouiouioui, bien sûr... Je me mets dans la peau de Jean-Paul E.T, qui vient de faire un voyage de 25 années-lumières... Tout ce à quoi j'aspire, c'est un bon lit et un verre de rouge, et parler a des mecs qui ont structuré leur société un poil plus qu' en construisant des tumuli de pierre trop bas de plafond pour envisager même de marcher debout a l'intérieur, non?

Surtout qu'a période equivalente, l'europe connaissait déjà l'empire romain...

En attendant, il y a cette energie qui vous "accroche ", qui perturbe votre perception du monde et de vous-même... Et qui a suscité chez moi le désir d'y retourner très vite! Pourquoi? c'est mon mystère de l'île de Pâques... La réponse, peut-êtresur ce blog, dès que j'y serais reparti et que je serais en mesure de poster de nouveaux croquis.

Le motu ( îlot ) Kaukau, est l'endroit ou les champions de l'île devait se rendre - à la nage, mon cousin! - et revenir, avec un précieux oeuf de mouette, qui devait leur assurer le statut d'homme-oiseau, dans le cas d'un retour avec l'oeuf intact, sur l'île principale. Et dire que j'arrive pas a me motiver pour aller courrir tous les deux jours...

Un moai planqué dans la vegetation, dans la pension ou nous étions michelbergés...

Ces dessins complètent les photos de la vente aux enchères, publiées précédemment. Allison, en MC, nous a fait un festival de bons mots, de vannes, et le moins qu'on puisse dire, c'est qu'elle sait vendre! Elle met tout le monde ou presque, a contribution. Elle a même fait une vente en m'interpellant pour clore l'enchère en français! " How do you say " sold " in french, Stéphane? "
Bon, elle avait un ou quatre martinis dans le cornet, la copine...

un Stew super drôle! il nous parlait comme a des potes... c'est bien, de temps en temps, ça peut aider a destresser les flippés de l'avion. Moi, je m'en fous, je m'endors en général avant le décollage. Trop de stress, et puis j'ai pas envie de me voir partir en flammes! Hahahaha!
le visage en bas, a droite, c'etait la chef de cabine. Type asiate, mais les yeux marrons clairs, un peu bouboule, mais mignonne. une combinaison insolite qui n'a pas manqué d'attirer l'attention aiguisée de l'observateur qui vous sert de guide sur ce blog...
Sinon, sur le trajet, au moins trois raton-laveurs qui ne connaissaient apparement pas l'histoire de Paf le chien...
La pluie, aussi. Ce fut le premier jour de flotte et depuis, tous les deux jours on y a droit. Eté de merde...
Sinon, comme a chaque retour ici, dès que je nous vois trimballer - Jason et moi - les cartons à dessins, je me dit qu'on va en chier... On se balade avec tellement de formats differents, et encombrants! Et puis le papier... Ca pèse, Bordel!

The flight attendant was kinda trying to be funny to get everyone relaxed before take off. I don't mind flying, unlike some people in my family. I usually fall asleep before take off... Asian, it seems, but with natural brown hair and hazelnut eyes. unusual enough to be worth a BLACK AND WHITE sketch? Go figure...
Other than that, at least three rakoons which obviously tried to stop cars with their heads...
That's when it started to rain over NJ. Hasn't stopped except for a few days here and there...

J'lai avais oubliés, ceux-là...les crob' du voyage jusqu'ici. alors on commence avec ce que l'amérique a de plus beau, de plus subtil, de plus sain... Le Texas! La gamine avec le tee-shirt, ci dessus, qui dit "On celebre la présence de Dieu" et juste en dessous, la silhouette de l'état du Texas... Imaginez juste un français qui se trimbalerait avec un blouson ou y aurait écrit " Vendée, pays de Dieu, des chouans, et du Roi ". Ah tiens, merde... ce serait possible aussi, ça, finalement. Putain, on est cernés!!!

Ben voilà,

La convention se termine et on est tous dans un état d'euphorie totale... Super ambiance, une des meilleures conventions du territoire américain. Hier soir a eu lieu la vente aux enchères des oeuvres mises à la disposition des organisateurs pour financer l'organisation des prochaines. Nous étions tous extrèmement heureux de voir Mark Brooks remporter le gros lot, en vendant sa peinture de Scarlet Witch au meilleur tarif! J'étais particulièrement heureux puisque l'année dernière, j'avais - ma modestie légendaire due-t-elle en souffrir - remporter le concours. Cette année, c'est son tour, et c'est amplement mérité! Il s'est sorti les doigts du falzard, ce salaud! Je posterai une image de son taf bientôt...

Ce soir, c'etait la soirée de clôture, avec un barbeuk au magasin de Shelton, l'organisateur de la conv... Tous ceux que je pense pouvoir considerer comme mes amis du comics aux états-unis etaient là. et les pros bien sûr. Chris CLaremont, Brandon Peterson, Adam Hughes et Allison Sohn... Et bien sûr, une pelletée de gars dont je connais le travail mais dont je ne connais pas la tronche! Peu importe, les amis etaient là, et c'est ce qui compte. On vient de rentrer à l'hotel, pour la dernière soirée, et on s'apprête a assister a une partie de poker avec Adam, Randy, Jim, Jason, probablement... Je reste a coté, j'ai encore une ou deux commissions a finir. Je vais essayer de crobarder les potos qui jouent, histoire d'avoir du biscuit pour le blog...

Bien arrivé chez Sammy, l'oncle barbu au goût vestimentaire de chiotte. On a pas idée de se trimballer en falsard à rayures, façon Obelix onorexique, avec gilet, queue-de-pie et noeud pap'... Je vous cause même pas du haut-de-forme! Pour faire pire, je vois que la permanente de Angela Bower - judith Light - dans Madame est servie! Ah, bordel, le goût et le vomi... c'est pourtant pas difficile de faire la difference, non?

Bon sinon, à part ça... Entre l'aéroport et la maison, quelques petites observations... Toujours aussi patriotes, des drapeaux a tous les coins de maison... c'est lourd. surtout qu'a coté de cette fierté qui parait à present mal venue, des tas de baraques sont visiblement abandonnées. Crise oblige. L'état de délabrement est visible, indéniable, tandis que je passe a nouveau devant certaines propriétés que je n'avais pas vu depuis six mois...

Il faut vous dire, m'sieu, qu'chez ces gens là...L'américain a depuis longtemps developpé un talent fou pour cacher la misère interieure. Peur de renvoyer une image dégradée, moins lisse, de son petit environnement proche qui cadrerait mal avec un optimisme parfois sincère, souvent forcé, comme pour conjurer le sort. Qui n'a que faire de tous les vernis sous lesquel on tente de le dissimuler. Ca a commencé dans sa forme politiquement correcte, je pense, avec la réhabilitation de NY, dans les années 70. Je suis retombé sur un ou deux films, dernièrement, qui montrait la ville à cette période... rien a voir avec aujourdh'ui. Les villes, comme leurs proches banlieues, ont un temps regagné leurs oscars des meilleurs décors, glamour et sexy...
Merci le ciné, merci les pubs pour voiture nous montrant des familiales dans leur habitat d'origine. La bonne petite bourgade baignée de soleil, sans clôture, bordée de haies basses, arborée, arrosée regulièrement pour que la pelouse soit toujours d'un vert tendre qui laisse penser aux beaufs de base, que le paradis, c'est là où on tourne Desperate Housewives. Je reviendrai aussi la dessus, tiens... mais plus tard.
Tout ca pour dire, que les banlieues chics de NY - qui ont mis tant d'energie a ressembler aux banlieues Burtonniene de "Edouard aux mains d'Argent" - sont en train de montrer la vacuité de toute cette réussite factice et ostentatoire. Même sur la fausse pierre ou le stuc moulé façon Tudor, quand le vernis craque...
Sauf que là, les dommages collatéraux ne sont pas laissés en place par soucis de témoignage d'un malheur qui peut tous nous atteindre, ou encore comme pense-bête de nos vies de cons effrenées et boulimiques de cette notion de rentabilité...
Non, les gonzes ont juste plus le temps de cacher leur cadavres. Ils laissent des maisons sur pieds, pleines de vides, aux carreaux brisés et aux herbes folles qui courent tout autour. La pelouse, autre sujet de fierté pour l'américain moyen ( qui n'a, de toute façon, pas de place neuronale pour grand-chose d'autre ) perd ses derniers mois de sa superbe, par ici. Ce qui en dit long sur l'état de destructuration de cette société. Je reviendrai aussi, une autre fois, sur ces fameuses pelouses...

Pour l'heure, au soir venu, ces hautes maisons à étages, semblabes à des vaisseaux fantômes, paraissent errer, par grappes, dans les quartiers encore vivants et habités, malgré tout... Vaisseaux immobiles, glissant le long des "drive", sans que le monde s'inquiete de leur lente perdition...
PUTAIN! CEST BEAU COMME DU LAGAFF'!

Hello tous!

Je suis en train de mettre la dernière main aux bagages de mon séjour aux states, pour le taf. On attaque d'emblée avec Jason, mon pote, par la convention de Charlotte - HeroesCon - en Caroline du Nord. Ce n'est donc pas une ballade d'agrément mais bien un voyage à but professionel. Je vais essayer de dessiner des trucs a destination de ce blog, comme prévu. Ouvrez l'oeil!

Packing my stuff to fly to the U.S tomorrow... and then HeroesCon on the very next week end, with my rep/buddy Jason! Not a leisure crew. I trained myself to forget about the concept of holidays. Les bouledogues français! Comment ça, chiens de tapettes? Salut, je poste enfin mes petites merdes dessinées... Les trucs qui servent a rien d'autre qu'a se masturber l'ego - genre " chuis artiste, ouais... je croque les instants de la vie, ouaaaaiiiiiiis... c'est petits riens qui peuvent être des touts, quoâââââ... quand on sait regarder, j'wa dire..."- ou alors devenir des refs utilisables un de ces quatre, dans le cadre d'un projet plus concret ( qui as dit mercantile? ). Le but originel de ces crobards visait a " casser " mon style de dessin habituel. Les secousses du métro sont une bonne aide pour ça.

Bon, on attaque avec du vieux! Dix ans que j'ai fais ces crobards de l'île LA PLUS BELLE DU MONDE! Mo'orea, en Polynésie Française! J'ai des liens là-bas, j'y retourne des que je peux. C'est beau... mais c'est loin! Mais c'est beau... Mais c'est cher! Mais c'est beau...

Hello, I'm finally posting the doodles and sketches I've been drawing and collecting for years now... Just because I didn't know what to do with them, and because those might be good a way to express my sick ( Come on, you knew that, right...? Every artist is a psycho! ) mind differently.

I'll try to catch up with the actual chronology at some point, but for now, I'll be posting the first decent sketches I did a few years back... And then sneak in a bunch of the latest in production. Mostly travel art, subway, cafés, streets which usually serve as mental notes for further use... or not!
